Claude Desktop reads MCP server configs from claude_desktop_config.json. When you ask Claude to do something that requires an external tool — like reading a webpage, querying a database, or checking an API — it routes the request through the configured MCP server automatically.
Manually configuring Claude Desktop MCP requires editing JSON, finding endpoints, and debugging connections. The CLI writes to these paths automatically, but here's where to find the config if you need to inspect it:

Claude Desktop sometimes needs explicit prompting: 'Use the web-reader tool to extract content from https://...' — direct tool references help Claude select the right MCP server.
The CLI writes to the standard Claude Desktop config path. On macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json. On Windows: %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json. Verify the file exists.
